Uncle Bob’s to Host Legendary Professional Eater

This Saturday, Takeru Kobayashi will head to the Uncle Bob’s Self Storage in Upper Saddle River, NJ, with his eyes (and his mouth) set on a big prize–setting the world record for the number of cupcakes consumed in one minute.

One of the world’s best competitive eaters, Kobayashi won the annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest six years in a row (2001 through 2006).

According to the International Federation of Competitive Eating, he holds these world records: 41 lobster rolls in 10 minutes, 58 bratwursts in 10 minutes, 17.7 pounds of cow brains in 15 minutes and 20 pounds of rice balls in 30 minutes.

“The Tsunami” also has eaten 81 soft tacos in 10 minutes and 14 Twinkies in one minute. In 2011 at Wing Bowl XX in Philadelphia, Kobayashi consumed 337 chicken wings. Remarkably, the 35-year-old, known by fans as “Kobi,” weighs a mere 128 pounds.

Beef with Major League Eating
Taking issue with the stringent exclusivity and monetary terms in his Major League Eating contract, Kobayashi refused to re-sign with the organization back in 2010.

Nevertheless, on July 4, 2010, Kobayashi attended the Nathan’s contest as a spectator, only to be thrown in jail after hopping on stage at the behest of cheering fans. As cops hauled him away for trespassing and resisting arrest, fans erupted in a “Let Him Eat” chant.

Although he no longer participates in Major League Eating’s nationally televised hot-dog-eating competition on Coney Island, Kobayashi puts on his own hot dog event every July 4.

This Fourth of July, Kobayashi ate 67 hot dogs at the Eventi, a hotel in Manhattan, NY. The same day over at Coney Island, Major League Eating’s Joey “Jaws” Chestnut–Kobayashi’s archrival–scarfed down 69 hot dogs to break his own world record.

If you’re in the New York area, Uncle Bob’s “Man vs. Cupcake” event kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The doors open at noon. New Jersey’s Sugar Flake Bakery is supplying the cupcakes.

“This will be a one-of-a-kind event that I know everyone is looking forward to,” Everett Taylor, area manager for Uncle Bob’s New Jersey storage facilities, said in a news release. “Kobayashi is a legend, and we can’t wait to share the experience with our customers and visitors.”

Last year, professional eater Patrick Bertoletti set Major League Eating’s record for the most cupcakes consumed—72 in six minutes.
